“TASTE IS A MATTER OF OPINION, AND IS CONSTANTLY SEEKING TO DEFINE ITSELF”
One of my favorite showrooms is Rose Tarlow Melrose House located on Melrose Avenue in West Hollywood. I love her antiques and antique reproductions. Her furniture, textiles, and lighting transcend time.
R. Tarlow Antiques opened on the secluded and sun-dappled Melrose Place in Los Angeles in 1976. For those lucky enough to find it, the shop was a sanctuary of impeccable antiques and eclectic pieces chosen from the most exclusive sources. Each item had a charm and a textured story that seemed to flow from the proprietor herself.
Rose traveled the world to find the most exquisite antiques for her shop and her private clients, striving to find one piece in each shipment that would give character to the whole collection —one piece with such singular style that it could inspire a room. When she began designing her own furniture a few years later, she sought to create a collection where every piece was that special piece.
For over thirty years, Rose Tarlow Melrose House has stayed true to this vision to create timeless designs that possess a twist and character to make each chair, each table, each textile, each accessory - extraordinary. We embrace the integrity of generations of craftsmen and artisans and recognize the character that age and natural imperfections can bring. We take an idea and play with it, change the proportion, make it comfortable, add a feature that only those who truly know can see. We celebrate the enigmatic beauty of the unexpected - for us the magic is in the details that give each piece its own personality and taken as a whole, forms the heart of everything we create.
In 1997, Rose was inspired to create her own line of textiles to complement her furniture. The fabrics span from sheers to velvets and include outdoor textiles. This comprehensive collection now includes proprietary leathers, trims and wall coverings. All elements exude Rose’s unique aesthetic of old-world sophistication made relevant for today’s tastes and lifestyles.
Today, Rose Tarlow Melrose House products, including lighting and accessories, are sold at the company’s flagship on Melrose Avenue in West Hollywood. Rose Tarlow's esoteric designs are only represented by the finest multi-line showrooms across the country. The philosophy—of original design, charming eccentricity, and uncompromising quality —remains true to the secluded antique shop where Rose Tarlow first began her design story many years ago.
QUALITY & CRAFTSMANSHIP
The difference between a business and a craft is in the details. When Rose Tarlow began restoring antiques in the 1970s, she sought out skilled local craftsmen for whom impeccable quality was a family trait, whose grandfathers and grandfathers’ grandfathers had passed down an artisan sensibility and rigorous standards to match her own.
Every item the company produces is considered for its proportion, texture, space, and color with relentless precision. The process begins with Rose’s singular vision for a product’s design, then she personally attends to details in each of the dozens of stages, from meticulous sketches to hand-cleaning and antiquing, through careful sculpting of the finest wood. Edges are routed with artful skill. Legs are hand turned. Layers of unique finishes are applied by hand and tailored to the grain direction of the wood and the customer’s preference, creating a richness and weight that transcend craft. Base cloths are carefully inspected before printing, textile weaves are studied and rewoven, ceramic glazes are applied and reapplied to achieve the exact variation in shade. Rose and her highly qualified team keep a watchful eye on these many stages of production in every single category the company designs and produces. No piece emerges from the workshop, the mill or the tannery that does not conform to Rose’s exacting quality standards. Every piece is a work of art.
Because each stage of production on each piece is done by hand, no two pieces are ever completely alike. As organic as nature itself, there is nothing like an original product from Rose Tarlow Melrose House.
